What is a gig musical?

Not quite a gig, not quite theatre, the latest version of my solo show falls into the growing genre of gig theatre, mostly found abroad. A more relaxed, less formal performance, where music, storytelling and performance combine, my goal is to get even closer to my authentic voice, while staying true to my roots as a musical theater actress.

I’ve retitled this gig version of my musical, calling it “The Other Side”, rather than “Molly Bell’s Hysterical”, so I can find the next step in the piece’s evolution. This style of performance has been calling me for a long while. I want to take my big broad Broadway style musical, keep the elements I love: comedy, pacing, and character work, and combine it with the grounded tone I often find when alone in my studio writing. I’m ready to take that next step with an audience.
